On March 5, Chen Yu, instructor of the course Urban Energy Supply Systems, invited Jiang Bing, Technical Director of the Shanghai Branch of Beijing Urban Construction Design and Development Group, to give a lecture on “Urban Energy Supply Systems – The ‘Wind’ of Metro”.

Jiang Bing pointed out that metro systems are closely related to daily life. The underground sections of metros are long, narrow, and relatively enclosed, making natural air circulation with the outside atmosphere difficult. Therefore, metros also need “wind” – ventilation and air conditioning systems. These systems not only provide a comfortable environment for passengers during operation but also, in case of fire, control smoke and fresh air flow through smoke extraction functions to ensure safe evacuation.

In August 2022, the China Urban Rail Transit Association released the Green Urban Rail Development Action Plan, setting quantified targets for green and low-carbon development in the industry. Jiang emphasized that the urban rail transit industry needs high-quality development. As an important component of urban rail transit, metro ventilation and air conditioning systems must also follow a high-quality development path. Thus, “quality improvement, cost reduction, and efficiency enhancement” are the goals of high-quality “wind”. Based on national 13th Five-Year Plan research results, Jiang also analyzed the current energy consumption status of metros, energy-saving pathways, and space-saving solutions.

As an essential part of daily life, metro travel is familiar to every student. Jiang Bing’s lecture, rooted in everyday life and enriched with professional knowledge and research outcomes, sparked great interest among students. This expert lecture not only broadened their horizons but also inspired their enthusiasm for learning professional knowledge.
